At 42 years old Jacob was involved in a serious collision whilst driving his car, sustaining complex leg fractures and a brain injury.
Our team got involved eight weeks post injury, soon after his discharge home. At this time his mobility was restricted, he was very fatigued and struggling with concentration and memory, all causing him to become disengaged from family life.
Our approach to rehabilitation
We first addressed property access issues and independence around the house, finding specialist equipment as needed and domestic support to reduce burden on the family.
Next we focused on developing daily structure and routine for Jacob to create a sense of purpose. Choosing activities he enjoyed like making simple meals, activities with his daughter and playing computer games all helped to improve his planning and concentration skills.
Referrals were made to a physiotherapist, psychologist and speech and language therapist to build on these gains, helping Jacob to better manage his psychological symptoms and his feelings of frustration about his situation.
Once his fractures were healed more physical challenge was added to the programme, including multi-terrain walking, household chores, gardening and some DIY. Jacob was also able to take a more active role looking after his daughter than before the accident, boosting his motivation.
Jacob's progress
Through our dedicated and client-centred approach, Jacob was able to regain his driving licence and acquire a suitable car which he had identified as one of his top priorities. He was also supported to plan and fully participate in a family holiday, after which he felt more motivated and optimistic about the future.
He was eager to return to the job he loved and so, when the time was right, our occupational therapist worked with him and his employer to devise and implement a phased return to work. This included analysis of his duties so that appropriate modifications could be made. Within two years Jacob was able to resume working full time in his pre-injury role.
